El-Rufai’s Exit Sparks Mass Defections from Kaduna APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State is facing an internal crisis as several key figures resign following the defection of former governor Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Among those who have left are Ja’afaru Ibrahim Sani, former Commissioner for Local Government, and Hafsat Mohammed Baba, former Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development. In their resignation letters, they accused the APC of straying from its founding principles and sidelining those who helped build the party.

Sani expressed frustration with the party’s leadership, claiming it had shown “hatred and disdain” toward him and others. Similarly, Baba stated that the APC had lost its sense of direction and no longer aligned with her values.

Despite the wave of defections, Kaduna APC leaders maintain that the party remains strong and unaffected by El-Rufai’s departure. However, analysts suggest that the situation could significantly alter the political landscape in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
