Ex-deputy Governor Omobayo Petitions IGP, DSS over ‘threat of arrest’ by Edo Government

Former Edo Deputy Governor Godwin Omobayo has written to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging intimidation and threats of arrest by the Edo State Government.

In a petition dated October 28, 2025, Omobayo argued that the ultimatum to surrender official assets was both “malicious and sub judice,” citing a pending case at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, challenging the legitimacy of his removal from office.

According to the letter, any attempt to arrest or prosecute him while the case is pending would amount to “contempt of court and abuse of executive power.” He urged security agencies to restrain state officials from interfering in matters already before the judiciary.

Omobayo’s camp maintains that his tenure as deputy governor, though short-lived, remains valid until the appellate court rules otherwise. They further allege that the asset recovery directive is politically motivated and aimed at discrediting him ahead of future political engagements.

The Edo Government has, however, denied targeting the former deputy governor, insisting that the order applies to all past officials and is part of a broader accountability initiative.

The development has deepened political tension in Benin City, where observers see the face-off as part of the post-Obaseki power struggle now shaping the state’s political landscape.
