Benin City — Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has dismissed reports suggesting that he is on the verge of defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking to journalists, Akpata described the rumours as unfounded and politically motivated.
The politician, who contested in the 2024 Edo governorship election, insisted that he remains committed to the Labour Party’s vision and has no plans to join another political platform. He argued that the speculations were being fueled by opponents who seek to discredit his political relevance and confuse his supporters.
Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), reiterated that his loyalty lies with Edo people and with the mission of the Labour Party to provide credible alternatives in governance. He urged the public to disregard what he described as “desperate propaganda.”
Party supporters welcomed the clarification, saying it was necessary to douse tension and speculation within the Labour Party’s base in Edo and beyond.
