FG vows to stop ASUU strike, promises measures to ensure stability

The Federal Government has given assurances that the nation will no longer witness repeated strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), promising new institutional and policy reforms aimed at addressing root causes of industrial action in the university sector.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, declared that the government is working toward structural solutions — including guaranteed funding for university infrastructure, sustainable staff welfare policies, and a binding framework for dispute resolution — so that perpetual strikes become relics of the past.

Speaking at a policy forum, a spokesperson for the government said that while ASUU’s demands over salaries, promotion backlog, and academic funding are legitimate, strikes are “not the best tool for raising grievances” and compromise learning outcomes and national advancement.

Union leaders have, in past years, criticised the government for ad hoc responses, non-implementation of agreements, and the absence of mechanisms for early intervention. The new promise of long-term stability was welcomed by some education stakeholders, but others cautioned that trust will only be earned through consistent follow-through and credible engagement.
