Former Super Eagles Coach slams Super Eagles Strikers

Former Super Eagles forward Yakubu Aiyegbeni has launched a scathing criticism of Nigeria’s current strikers, claiming that most are “not ready to play” and lack the hunger and commitment of elite forwards. Speaking on the Home Turf podcast, Yakubu singled out Victor Osimhen as the only truly dedicated attacker, asserting that others in the squad do not match his intensity.

Yakubu argued that while Osimhen remains a vital outlet for the national team, the lack of consistent contributions from backup strikers undermines the team’s attacking threat. He recalled his own era, when competition for the strike role was fierce among players like Julius Aghahowa, Obafemi Martins, and Victor Agali all of whom “wanted to play” rather than simply be part of the squad.

He also lamented how the current squad lacks creative midfielders who can supply the kind of killer passes that feed top strikers. According to Yakubu, Nigeria’s midfield is overly defensive, leaving little support for the forwards.

Yakubu’s comments reflect a broader concern about the current generation’s attacking inefficiency, calling for a higher level of competition, commitment, and tactical support if Nigeria is to compete effectively in major tournaments.
