Nigeria’s participation at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships has been thrown into uncertainty after four of its top wrestlers were denied visas to travel for the competition.
Despite fulfilling accreditation and documentation requirements, the athletes were reportedly turned down by the relevant embassy, leaving the Wrestling Federation scrambling for last-minute solutions. Officials described the setback as “regrettable and demoralising,” particularly for athletes who had trained for months.
The affected wrestlers were billed to compete in key weight categories where Nigeria had strong medal hopes. Their absence could significantly weaken the nation’s representation on the global stage and undermine years of preparation.
Sports analysts say the development highlights broader challenges facing Nigerian sports logistics, from delayed funding approvals to poor coordination with embassies. Athletes often face uncertainty over travel arrangements, which hampers confidence and disrupts focus.
The federation has appealed for urgent intervention from the sports ministry and international partners, insisting that Nigerian athletes deserve fair opportunities to showcase their talent abroad.
