FRESH CRISIS ROCKS EDO PDP AS ORBIH, AZIEGBEMI CLASH OVER SPEAKER’S DEFECTION TO APC

, A fresh crisis has erupted within the Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) following the defection of the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), exposing deep divisions between party leaders Chief Dan Orbih and Tony Aziegbemi.
Tony Aziegbemi, a factional caretaker chairman of the Edo PDP, addressed journalists in Benin City and downplayed the impact of Agbebaku’s exit. He described the speaker as a longtime closet supporter of the APC, whose defection was inevitable.
“The speaker’s move wasn’t driven by ideology or conviction. It was about personal ambition and self-preservation,” Aziegbemi stated. He dismissed the APC’s welcome rally as “a desperate spectacle designed to impress the president and APC national leadership,” adding that Agbebaku’s departure would not affect the PDP’s chances in the upcoming September governorship election.
However, Chief Dan Orbih, the PDP’s National Vice Chairman (South-South), fired back in a scathing statement, accusing Aziegbemi of lacking the moral authority to speak on behalf of the party. Orbih alleged that Aziegbemi had presided over “one of the most destructive periods in the history of Edo PDP” and should be held accountable for the party’s internal decay.
“His attempt to scapegoat Speaker Agbebaku for the party’s current crisis is both unfortunate and dishonest,” Orbih said. He maintained that the speaker’s defection was a reflection of widespread disillusionment within the party, attributing the unrest to what he called “the reckless mismanagement of the party by Aziegbemi and his political ally, former Governor Godwin Obaseki.”
Orbih further accused the Obaseki-Aziegbemi camp of ruling the party with “greed, arrogance, and a blatant disregard for democratic principles,” which he argued had alienated key stakeholders and fractured party unity.
He concluded by demanding Aziegbemi’s resignation, saying the embattled caretaker chairman should step aside to allow genuine efforts to rebuild the party in the state. “The time for self-serving political games is over,” Orbih declared.
The escalating war of words between the two PDP factions comes just months before the Edo governorship election, further complicating the party’s chances of mounting a credible campaign amid growing internal unrest.
