Benin City, Edo State — Governor Monday Okpebholo has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Benin City into a modern urban hub through a comprehensive infrastructure renewal drive. The initiative, tagged “Benin Renaissance Project,” aims to modernize road networks, drainage systems, public transportation, and street lighting across the metropolis.
Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing works, the Governor said the project represents his government’s vision to balance Edo’s historic identity with modern functionality. “Our mission is to blend the city’s proud heritage with 21st-century development standards. We want a Benin that works for everyone — from residents to investors and visitors,” Okpebholo said.
The project, being executed in collaboration with leading construction firms, covers over 60 kilometers of roads and includes the redesign of the King’s Square corridor, construction of new pedestrian bridges, and the rehabilitation of drainage systems in the Uselu, Sakponba, and Upper Mission areas.
Commissioner for Works, Dr. Felix Akhabue, noted that work is progressing according to schedule, emphasizing that environmental sustainability is a top priority. “We are ensuring that every construction effort aligns with climate-resilient standards,” he stated.
Local residents have praised the initiative, saying it has already begun to ease traffic flow and improve urban aesthetics. Experts predict that the Benin Renaissance Project will serve as a catalyst for tourism, trade, and real estate investment across Edo State.
