In a historic move during the ongoing Christmas Unplugged 2025 event, Governor Umo Eno approved the immediate employment of Miss Abigail Okon Edet, a young woman once abandoned at birth and raised in a government-owned children’s home, into the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service.
Governor Eno directed the Head of Civil Service and the Civil Service Commission to deploy Abigail to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service for mentorship, waiving all formal conditions for employment. The decision drew widespread applause and marked a powerful testament to the administration’s commitment to child protection and inclusive governance.
Abigail recounted surviving abandonment, rejection, and multiple threats to her life before being rescued by the Akwa Ibom State Government in 2010 through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare. She later completed her Political Science and Public Administration degree at the University of Uyo in 2023 and finished her NYSC in August 2025.
Expressing gratitude, Abigail credited the government for her survival and educational journey, describing the intervention as life-changing. Governor Eno highlighted her story as an example of how leadership in Akwa Ibom goes beyond infrastructure projects, emphasizing restoring lives and fostering hope as core principles of his administration.
The employment of Abigail serves as a demonstration of the state government’s dedication to empowering vulnerable citizens, inspiring young people to rise above challenges and pursue their full potential.
