Gov Umo Eno approves upgrade of Akwa Ibom College of Education to University

In a landmark decision aimed at strengthening teacher education and human capital development, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the upgrading of the State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, to a University of Education.

The announcement followed deliberations at the State Executive Council meeting held at Government House, Uyo, where members commended the move as a bold step toward educational excellence.

According to sources at the meeting, the upgrade aligns with the Governor’s ARISE Agenda, which prioritizes education and capacity building as cornerstones of the State’s socioeconomic advancement.

Governor Eno noted that the transition will not only expand access to quality tertiary education but also produce a new generation of professional educators equipped for the challenges of modern learning.

“This upgrade reflects our commitment to investing in human capital — the most important asset any state can possess. A University of Education will strengthen teacher training, research, and innovation in the education sector,” the Governor said.

The State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, lauded the initiative, saying it will improve the standard of teaching and learning and create more opportunities for students across Akwa Ibom and beyond.

She disclosed that the State Government will work closely with the National Universities Commission (NUC) to fast-track the accreditation and full takeoff process of the institution.

Stakeholders, including lecturers and students of the College, expressed excitement, describing the upgrade as “a dream come true.”
