Undeterred by heavy rainfall, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has launched construction on a major rural road that promises to revolutionize transportation and connectivity between Uyo and Ikono Local Government Areas. The 12.6-kilometre Nung Ukim–Afaha Obio Enwang–Nung Udoe–Itak Road project, flagged off on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, is a key component of the Governor’s ARISE Agenda for rural development.
The groundbreaking ceremony, performed on behalf of the Governor by Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, underscored the administration’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling campaign promises, especially to communities long excluded from core infrastructure investment.
“This road is another testimony to Governor Eno’s promise-keeping character. It will connect rural communities to the capital and open up new economic possibilities,” Prince Uwah said.
Chairman of Ikono LGA, Engr. Otobong Essien, speaking alongside the Vice Chairman of Uyo, praised the Governor for bringing visible development to the grassroots and targeting rural areas often ignored in past administrations.
Presenting the technical details of the road, Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, explained that the road would span nine villages and feature a high-quality 8-metre-wide carriageway, 25 kilometres of side drains, and durable culverts at key points. The road construction will be done to professional specifications, including a 150mm sub-base, 150mm stone base, and 50mm asphaltic wearing course.
Representing Verini Construction Company Ltd., contractor Mr. Ini Utuk pledged to execute the project to the highest standards, thanking the Governor for his confidence in local expertise.
The road is expected to be completed and commissioned within two years, promising not just improved mobility but also stimulating trade, agriculture, and access to healthcare and education for thousands of rural dwellers.
