GOVERNORS MEET DEFENCE CHIEF OVER NATIONWIDE INSECURITY
The 36 state governors, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), met behind closed doors on Wednesday April 23rd with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to address the escalating security challenges across the country. The emergency meeting, chaired by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, lasted for about two hours at the NGF Secretariat in Abuja.
The high-level talks come in response to a disturbing surge in killings, kidnappings, and bandit attacks—particularly in Benue and Plateau States—where hundreds of civilians, including women and children, have lost their lives in recent weeks.
Though no official statement was issued at the end of the closed-door session, the Chief of Defence Staff declined to speak with reporters, maintaining the confidentiality of the deliberations. However, the presence of governors from Borno, Ekiti, Adamawa, Kaduna, Bayelsa, Gombe, Ogun, Imo, Oyo, Ondo, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau, alongside deputy governors from Niger, Enugu, and Bauchi, underscores the urgency of the matter.
In addition to the security dialogue, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, was also scheduled to brief the governors on the federal government’s ongoing policies in the housing sector, as part of broader efforts to coordinate development strategies between federal and state governments.
