An advance team attached to Abia State Government came under attack Tuesday December 2nd, near Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, Imo State, while en route to the facility for official duties.
Security sources say unidentified gunmen opened fire on the vehicle carrying three staff members between Umuowa and Ihitte junction, shortly before the airport precinct.
The government’s spokesperson was quick to clarify that the convoy of Governor Alex Otti was not involved the attack hit only the advance team. No fatalities or serious injuries were recorded.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident as concern grows over rising insecurity along key interstate routes in the South-East. Imo State Police have yet to issue an official comment, but the state government has urged calm and reassured the public of enhanced protection for officials doing state work.
