Handover in leadership as PDP seeks fresh start

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially completed its leadership transition as immediate-past National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum handed over the reins to the newly elected National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN. The ceremony took place at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja on Dec 2nd, Tuesday.

Damagum delivered a two-volume stewardship report to Turaki and formally concluded his tenure, highlighting the need for unity, organizational discipline, and renewed focus ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

Turaki took over with a strong pledge to reposition the party, rebuild its grassroots structures across Nigeria, enforce internal discipline, and present a united front as a credible, disciplined opposition. He emphasized that the PDP remains intact and ready to reclaim relevance despite recent internal challenges.

As part of the transition, the party’s leadership reiterated commitment to fairness, internal reforms, and strengthened party structures, positioning itself to challenge the ruling establishment in future elections.
