HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MARKS MIDTERM WITH HISTORIC LEGISLATIVE SCORECARD

The House of Representatives has concluded the Second Legislative Session of the 10th Assembly with a powerful midterm review, marking two years of dynamic lawmaking, sweeping reforms, and citizen-focused interventions.
Inaugurated on June 13, 2023, the 10th House has operated under an ambitious 8-Point Legislative Agenda aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope vision. Under Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen’s leadership, the House has reviewed 2,263 bills—186 of which were passed and 51 signed into law—record-breaking figures for any president’s first two years. Over 65% of bills made it past second reading, including 87 constitutional amendments.
Key achievements include ₦61.5 billion recovered from oil and gas companies via legislative oversight and a ₦6.11 trillion national security allocation. Social policy gains are equally notable, with education funding rising to 8.2%, health sector investments covering over 4,000 primary healthcare centres, and the Student Loan Act supporting 500,000 learners. A ₦70,000 minimum wage was also legislatively backed.
The House has distinguished itself as a “House with a Human Face,” mobilising over ₦1.8 billion in voluntary donations for vulnerable Nigerians, housing for families of deceased lawmakers, and internally displaced persons across multiple states.
In diplomacy, 82 bilateral legislative friendship groups have been established, and ties deepened with global partners like the UNDP, PLAC, YIAGA Africa, and GenderMobile.
The upcoming Legislative Open Week, themed “Two Years in the People’s House,” will unveil the House’s midterm scorecard, highlight the progress of the 6th Constitutional Alteration, and feature interactive sessions with civil society, youth, labour unions, and private sector players.
Speaker Tajudeen affirmed, “This House has been a laboratory of reform and a platform for results… Nigerians can expect an even more proactive and people-oriented legislature as we enter the third session.”
