HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO DEBATE NNAMDI KANU’S MEDICAL CONDITION

The House of Representatives is set to deliberate on the medical condition of Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following growing concerns about his health in custody.

The motion, sponsored by lawmakers from the South-East, seeks urgent intervention to ensure that Kanu receives adequate medical attention in line with constitutional provisions and international human rights standards.

Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in 2021, has through his lawyers and family raised alarms about deteriorating health. Civil society groups and Igbo leaders have also called on the Federal Government to prioritize his treatment.

The debate is expected to be contentious, given the political sensitivities around the IPOB issue. However, proponents argue that irrespective of charges, Kanu remains entitled to basic healthcare rights under Nigerian law.
