INEC Raises Issue with Senators Recall Petition

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has flagged a major issue in the ongoing recall process of suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

INEC revealed that the petition submitted by her constituents lacked proper contact details for the representatives of the petitioners, a requirement stipulated in Clause 1(f) of its Regulations and Guidelines for Recall.

The commission stated that while the petitioners claimed to have collected signatures from over half of the 474,554 registered voters in Kogi Central, the covering letter only provided “Okene, Kogi State” as an address—an insufficient detail for official communication. Additionally, only one phone number was included, instead of the multiple contacts required.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, emphasized that while the commission is committed to following due process, the recall can only proceed once all requirements are met.

“In the absence of a definite contact address, the commission is making efforts to use other means to notify the representatives of the petitioners of the situation,” Olumekun stated.

He reassured Nigerians that INEC will strictly adhere to legal guidelines, urging the public to disregard misinformation regarding the process. The next steps in the recall process will be announced once all requirements are fulfilled.
