JEGA CALLS FOR PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION OF ASUU NEC MEMBERS, MOCKS UNION’S STRIKE CULTURE
Public affairs analyst and media publisher Mahmud Jega has stirred controversy by calling for a psychiatric evaluation of the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accusing the unions top officials of repeatedly endangering the education sector through constant strikes. In a satirical post titled “Piwuna, Examine ASUU’s Head”, Jega took direct aim at newly elected ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist, urging him to “examine the heads” of his fellow NEC members instead of embarking on the usual industrial showdowns.
The post, shared on Jega’s Facebook page, was a reaction to Piwuna’s election at ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin City, Edo State. Prof. Piwuna replaces Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke as the new face of the union. Jega argued that annual strikes, some lasting almost a year, disrupt the academic calendar, inflict financial and emotional burdens on students and parents, and fuel educational migration abroad. He accused ASUU of acting without long-term strategy or accountability and suggested that mental health screening might explain the recurring pattern of decisions that have crippled Nigerian public universities for decades.
