Jigawa State Approves ₦2.5 Billion for Oil and Uranium Explorations

In a strategic move to diversify its economic base, the Jigawa State Government has approved an allocation of ₦2.55 billion for a geophysical survey to explore oil, gas, uranium and other solid-mineral resources within the state. The decision was taken during the State Executive Council meeting in Dutse.

The information minister, Sagir Ahmed Musa, stated that the funding would enable international-standard data acquisition and analysis, intended to attract local and foreign investors and create new jobs in the extractive and services sectors. The survey is seen as the first step of the Namadi Administration’s resource-driven industrialisation plan, aiming to position Jigawa as an emerging frontier for mining and hydrocarbon exploration.

Commissioners emphasised that the survey would provide a scientifically rigorous basis for decision-making, allowing the state to map reserves, develop interim feasibility studies and structure licensing frameworks. The government expects downstream benefits such as local refinery parts, ancillary services and value-chain integration. However, experts warn that successful execution will depend on regulatory clarity, environmental safeguards and community engagement to avoid the pitfalls of resource curse dynamics in other states.
