Kano Government Clarifies Court Verdict on Emirship Dispute

The Kano State Government has addressed widespread misinterpretations of the Court of Appeal’s judgment on the ongoing emirship dispute, confirming that the ruling remains binding unless overturned by the Supreme Court.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Haruna Dederi explained that the Court of Appeal upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019, reversing an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court. However, Alhaji Aminu Dan’agundi has since filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Dederi clarified that the recent stay of execution granted by the Court of Appeal is a standard legal procedure to maintain the status quo pending the Supreme Court’s decision.

“The government has instructed its legal team to review the proceedings and determine the next steps in line with the law,” he said, urging the public to remain calm and law-abiding.
