The Federal Ministry of Works has ordered the immediate closure of one carriageway of the Keffi Flyover after a heavy-duty truck carrying an excavator struck and damaged critical structural beams, raising safety concerns.
Federal Works Minister Senator David Umahi, who personally visited the site alongside engineers from FERMA and CGC Nigeria Ltd., confirmed that a comprehensive assessment revealed that at least two beams were dislodged and showed visible signs of cracking. The truck, reportedly oversized and moving outside permitted hours, failed to clear the vertical clearance limit, causing a violent impact that shook the overpass.
“This is a serious breach of infrastructure safety. We have moved quickly to secure the site and will commence immediate repairs using funds from the President’s Emergency Intervention Envelope,” Umahi said.
The flyover, a major link between Abuja and key northern states, is critical for both civilian travel and logistics. CGC Nigeria has been directed to fabricate new beams within 30 days, while a temporary traffic diversion plan has been activated. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has also been instructed to tighten checks on truck compliance to vertical clearance limits nationwide.
