M23 rebels seize strategic town as thousands flee amid violence

The M23 rebels reportedly backed by the army of a neighbouring country  have captured the strategic town of Luvungi in South Kivu, along with several surrounding villages, as their advance continues unabated in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

According to local sources, government troops withdrew from Luvungi to avoid heavy fighting and to spare civilians unnecessary risk. The retreat, though tactically defensive, has left thousands of residents displaced, many now seeking refuge in makeshift camps or neighbouring towns.

The conflict has had a devastating collateral impact: reports indicate that artillery shells allegedly fired from across the border  struck communities across the Ruzizi Plain, destroying homes, schools and health‑centres. Civilians have reportedly been killed, and survivors describe a humanitarian crisis worsening by the hour.

Observers warn the advance may not stop at Luvungi. The rebels are reportedly pushing toward Uvira, a development that, if realised, risks further destabilization in South Kivu and deeper displacement of vulnerable populations.

The seizure of Luvungi underscores the fragility of recent ceasefire agreements for eastern DRC: despite attempts at peace, rebel momentum remains strong, and civilians continue to bear the brunt.
