Mali suspends schools for two weeks as Fuel Crisis Intensifies

The government of Mali has ordered a nationwide two-week closure of schools in response to a deepening fuel crisis that has caused severe shortages, transport chaos, and rising social tensions.

Over the past weeks, long lines at petrol stations, sharp price hikes, and erratic supply have crippled mobility and disrupted public services. The education ministry cited safety and logistical concerns in ordering the suspension as emergency measures.

Critics argue the suspension disproportionately penalises students from vulnerable communities. While higher-income families may still access private alternatives, many public school pupils risk falling behind. Analysts suggest the deeper issue is structural inefficiencies and the need for energy sector reform.

Authorities say it is a temporary measure, and schools are expected to resume once fuel supply stabilizes and security is assured for transportation routes.
