The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has condemned the Senate for refusing to immortalize late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the architect of Nigeria’s historic 1993 elections.
In a statement, MASSOB accused the Senate of sidelining Nwosu because he was Igbo. The group argued that without Nwosu’s efforts, there would be no Democracy Day celebration in Nigeria today.
Nwosu, who chaired the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), oversaw the June 12, 1993, election widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest. However, his work was undermined when the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election.
MASSOB praised South-East senators and some non-Igbo lawmakers who supported Nwosu’s recognition. The group called on South-East governors to honor Nwosu at the state level, insisting that he remains a pillar of Nigerian democracy.
