Jamiu Abiola, son of late democracy icon Chief MKO Abiola and current adviser to President Tinubu, has condemned former military leader Ibrahim Babangida for blaming General Sani Abacha for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. In an interview, Jamiu dismissed Babangida’s claim as “tales by moonlight” and accused him of revisionism.
He questioned why Babangida failed to act through his ally, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, to secure MKO’s release after Abacha’s death, saying such efforts could have saved his father’s life. He further criticized the belated publication of the election results in Babangida’s memoir as an empty gesture and reiterated that the former president bears primary responsibility for derailing Nigeria’s democratic path.
