Morocco defeat Nigeria on penalties to clinch AFCON 2025 final spot

The dream of a fourth continental title ended in a night of unbearable tension in Marrakech as the Super Eagles of Nigeria were edged out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations by the host nation, Morocco. In a semi-final clash that lived up to its billing as a “final before the final,” the Atlas Lions secured their place in the championship match following a dramatic penalty shootout that broke Nigerian hearts after 120 minutes of high-octane football had ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

The encounter began as a tactical masterclass, with Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle setting up a disciplined defensive block that frustrated the Moroccan attackers and silenced the deafening roar of the partisan home crowd for much of the first half. The Super Eagles’ patience appeared to pay off early in the second period when a lightning-fast counter-attack caught the Moroccan defense off guard, allowing Nigeria to snatch a shock lead. The goal sent shockwaves through the stadium and momentarily put the tournament favorites on the brink of elimination.

However, the Atlas Lions, spurred on by the relentless energy of their supporters, refused to yield. They launched wave after wave of attacks, eventually finding a late equalizer through a well-worked set piece that sent the match into a frantic period of extra time. Despite several close chances for both sides in the additional thirty minutes, including a near-winner from Victor Osimhen that was cleared off the line, the deadlock remained unbroken, forcing the semi-final into the dreaded lottery of a penalty shootout.

In the final reckoning, the pressure of the moment and the heroics of Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved to be the deciding factors. While the Moroccans remained clinical from the spot, the Super Eagles faltered, seeing two of their efforts saved. As the final Moroccan penalty hit the back of the net, the stadium erupted in celebration, marking the end of a valiant campaign for Nigeria. Though the Super Eagles must now prepare for a third-place play-off, they leave the main stage having earned immense respect for taking the hosts to the absolute limit in one of the most memorable matches in AFCON history.
