NATIONAL ASSEMBLY CONSIDERS BILL TO MOVE PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATIONS VENUE

A proposal currently under consideration at the National Assembly may permanently alter the setting of Nigeria’s presidential inaugurations. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele revealed on Tuesday June 11th that legislators are working on a bill that would relocate the swearing-in of future presidents from the familiar Eagle Square to the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
This development was disclosed during a media briefing ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration. According to Bamidele, the planned change reflects a desire by lawmakers to “reshape Nigeria’s political setting” and give deeper institutional meaning to the country’s democratic rituals. “We are also hoping to change our political setting to the extent that the swearing-in of the next president and commander-in-chief… will be in the arcade of the National Assembly,” he said.
Since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, Eagle Square — a ceremonial ground nestled between the Federal Secretariat and the Head of Service Building — has served as the traditional venue for presidential inaugurations. Built in the same year, the square has hosted major state events including Armed Forces Remembrance Day parades, Independence Day celebrations, and other civic and political gatherings.
However, if the proposed legislation passes, the National Assembly Complex will become the new symbolic heart of national transitions, reinforcing its place as the seat of the people’s mandate. Proponents argue that hosting inaugurations in the legislative chambers, rather than an open civic arena, would reflect the republic’s foundation on constitutional order and representative democracy.
While the Eagle Square remains a national landmark, its potential loss of the inauguration role would mark a major departure from 25 years of tradition and potentially redefine the ceremonial tone of future democratic transitions.
