The Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, Imo State, has suspended a lecturer, Okoroafor Ifeanyichukwu, after a video of him physically assaulting a student went viral.
In the disturbing footage, Ifeanyichukwu was seen slapping and kicking the student, who fell onto a concrete walkway. The video sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many calling for disciplinary action against the lecturer.
Following the outcry, the institution issued a suspension letter on Friday, signed by the Director of the Technical and Entrepreneurship Development Centre (TEDC), Dr. Okoye P.C. The letter, which was copied to the Rector, Dean of Student Affairs, and the Student Union Government, confirmed that Ifeanyichukwu would remain suspended pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
In response, the lecturer has publicly apologized, describing his actions as unprofessional. He expressed regret for causing distress to the student and pledged to change his approach to ensure a safer learning environment.
The school’s management has assured the public that a thorough probe will be conducted and appropriate actions taken.
