Abuja, Nigeria — The newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Adebayo Amupitan, will formally assume office on Thursday, October 23rd 2025, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. His first official engagement will be a closed-door meeting with national commissioners, directors and heads of departments to outline his reform blueprint ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Professor Amupitan, a constitutional law expert and former Dean at the University of Jos, was confirmed by the Senate earlier this month following President Bola Tinubu’s nomination. He succeeds Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his tenure after nearly a decade at the helm.
According to INEC sources, Amupitan’s inaugural address will focus on electoral transparency, the use of technology, and internal discipline among staff. His leadership is expected to prioritise the implementation of the proposed Electoral Act amendments currently under Senate review, as well as strategies to ensure early procurement of materials and improved logistics.
Observers believe his assumption marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s electoral evolution, given growing public demand for credible elections and the need to rebuild confidence in INEC’s neutrality.
