New Kenyan Police contingent arrives in Haiti to bolster gang‑fighting force

A fresh contingent of 230 specialized officers from Kenya landed on Monday December 8th at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Haiti, joining the multinational force combating gang violence under the newly expanded mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF).

This brings Kenya’s total deployment to over 700 officers making it the largest national contributor to Haiti’s stabilization effort. During the arrival ceremony, GSF Commander Godfrey Otunge praised the deployment, describing it as “timely and essential” to restoring security in Haiti’s most volatile zones.

The deployment follows a renewed United Nations-backed push after gang activity surged with the GSF now tasked with dismantling armed groups that have long controlled parts of the capital, including key public infrastructure.

Kenya’s involvement underscores international support for Haiti at a time when local institutions have struggled to contain widespread crime, kidnappings, and gang‑related atrocities.
