NFF launches FIFA talent development scheme for Girls

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally launched a new FIFA‑backed Talent Development Scheme for Girls, marking a major investment in the future of women’s football in Nigeria. The initiative aims to identify, nurture, and accelerate the development of young female footballers across the country, bridging gaps in grassroots access and expanding the talent pipeline feeding national teams at all levels. Under the programme, the NFF will work with state football associations, schools, and community clubs to set up age‑group talent hubs. These hubs will provide structured training environments, regular competitive fixtures, and support services including coaching, physical development, and psychological readiness all aligned with FIFA’s global standards for youth development. Players who excel in early stages will have opportunities to progress into elite academies and Nigeria’s national youth teams.

The scheme represents a strategic pivot toward sustainability in women’s football, addressing long‑standing challenges that have limited pathways for girls from grassroots to professional levels. By embedding development structures at state and community levels, the programme seeks to ensure that promising players are not lost to the sport due to lack of opportunity or support.

NFF leadership says the initiative will also dovetail with broader continental objectives to strengthen female representation in football, positioning Nigeria to remain competitive in future FIFA and CAF competitions. Stakeholders expect the programme to deepen participation, improve technical standards, and ultimately contribute to the success of Nigeria’s senior women’s national team on the global stage.
