The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has debunked reports alleging Nigeria has abandoned its citizens trapped in Iran amid the worsening Iran-Israel conflict. Minister Yusuf Tuggar, via a statement by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran remains operational despite security disruptions.
Due to ongoing bombings in Tehran, embassy staff now work remotely but continue to monitor Nigerian nationals. In partnership with the Armenian government, plans are in advanced stages to secure safe passage for Nigerian evacuees via Yerevan.
Amb. Abdulrasheed Omar Lawal, Nigeria’s Head of Mission in Iran, met with Armenian officials to solidify evacuation logistics. The ministry provided emergency contacts and encouraged Nigerians to stay in touch via the local Eitaa messaging app.
“This cooperation with Armenia shows the importance of international solidarity in a crisis. We appreciate their humanitarian gesture,” the statement concluded.
