Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania at the Fez Stadium in Morocco, setting a positive tone for Group C as the tournament unfolds.
The match saw Semi Ajayi break the deadlock in the 36th minute, heading in from a well-placed Alex Iwobi cross to give Nigeria the lead. Tanzania responded early in the second half, with Charles M’Mombwa netting a composed finish in the 50th minute to level the score and briefly lift the spirits of the underdogs.
Just minutes later, Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s advantage with a brilliant long-range strike, firing past the goalkeeper to make it 2–1 and ultimately secure all three points for the Super Eagles. Lookman’s goal came shortly after Tanzania’s equaliser and proved decisive in a tight contest that saw Nigeria dominate possession and create several chances.
Despite dominating much of the game, Victor Osimhen was unable to find his name on the scoresheet, with one effort ruled out for offside, and Tanzania had a few late opportunities that they failed to convert. The win positions Nigeria well as they prepare for upcoming Group C tests against Tunisia and Uganda.
