The National Sports Commission (NSC) has cleared outstanding allowances and performance bonuses for Team Nigeria athletes who competed in the 2025 World Athletics Championships, a move officials say will restore trust and morale within the national squad.
The payment covers training camp stipends, competition rewards and logistical support allowances. Athletes and coaches had previously hinted at frustration regarding delayed payments, which often limit preparation and affect motivation.
In a statement, the NSC reaffirmed its commitment to improving athlete welfare and ensuring international competitors receive timely financial support. The Commission noted that early clearance of allowances will be standard practice going forward, as Nigeria prepares for a packed 2026 global sporting calendar.
Analysts described the development as a positive shift that could translate into better athlete retention and improved performance outcomes.
