NUPENG, PENGASSAN OPPOSE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S SALE OF OIL AND GAS ASSETS

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) have formally opposed the federal government’s plan to privatize or sell state-owned oil and gas assets.

In a joint statement, both unions expressed concern that the proposed sales could lead to significant job losses and reduce government revenue from the energy sector. They called for full disclosure of all plans, including details of valuations, investors, and timelines for the transactions.

The unions emphasized that the oil and gas sector remains a strategic part of the national economy, and any divestment must be conducted transparently, with the welfare of workers and the nation as a priority. NUPENG and PENGASSAN have also threatened industrial action should the government proceed without proper consultation and adherence to established labor protocols.
