NYSC withdraws Corps Members from Benue Community amid Escalating Violence

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withdrawn all corps members from Mbaa community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State due to worsening security conditions.

In a statement released on Thursday, 20th February, NYSC’s Assistant Director of Information, Yahuza Adamu, confirmed the decision, citing “ongoing and frequent attacks” in the community, which shares a border with Cameroon. He added that NYSC has not deployed any corps members to the area in recent times due to the persistent threat of violence.

The security situation in Mbaa has deteriorated significantly, with reports indicating that suspected armed herders have killed over 20 individuals in recent weeks. Among the victims were 16 farmers whose bodies were discovered in the River Katsina Ala, a chilling reminder of the ongoing clashes between herders and local communities.

Adamu reassured parents and guardians that all corps members are safe and accounted for.

He further clarified that corps members posted to Jato Acka Turan, a separate location far from the affected area, are not under any immediate security threat.

The NYSC emphasized that it prioritizes the safety of its members and regularly works with security agencies to assess risks and ensure adequate protection. “We remain vigilant and will continue collaborating with security forces to safeguard our corps members,” Adamu added.

Parents and guardians were urged to rely on official NYSC communication channels for accurate updates rather than unverified reports.
