Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organisation for Igbo people, has renewed its demand for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a strongly worded communiqué, the group argued that Kanu’s prolonged detention continues to inflame tensions in the southeast and called on authorities to explore legal avenues for resolving the matter.
Ohanaeze said it remains committed to non-violent and lawful advocacy and urged both federal authorities and security agencies to pursue transparent engagement that would ensure peace and stability. The organisation appealed for an immediate review of the legal procedures in Kanu’s case and proposed dialogue involving community elders, legal representatives and government interlocutors.
National and regional stakeholders have reacted with a spectrum of views: some welcomed the call for de-escalation, while others reiterated the need for judicial process to run its course. Ohanaeze said it would pursue discussions with relevant authorities and warned against any action that could exacerbate the security situation in the southeast.
