Okpebholo presents ₦939.85bn “budget of hope and growth” to Edo house of assembly

Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has presented a ₦939.85 billion 2026 budget proposal tagged the Budget of Hope and Growth to the Edo State House of Assembly as the administration seeks to build on its first year’s achievements and drive broader socioeconomic development.

Okpebholo said the fiscal plan reflects a commitment to consolidate gains made in 2025, expand government programmes and deliver tangible results for citizens in key sectors. The proposed budget marks a significant increase from the 2025 fiscal plan and prioritises security, infrastructure, agriculture, education, job creation and healthcare, with capital expenditure accounting for about 68 percent of the total.

Under the proposal, ₦637 billion is earmarked for capital projects while ₦302 billion will support recurrent costs. Funding sources outlined by Okpebholo include ₦160 billion from internally generated revenue (IGR), ₦480 billion from Federation Account allocations (FAAC), ₦153 billion from capital receipts and grants, and ₦146 billion from public-private partnerships (PPP).

Lawmakers are expected to scrutinise the plan before passage into law, a process that will shape how Edo deploys resources for development in the year ahead. Supporters of the governor’s budget initiative argue that the emphasis on infrastructure and social services could catalyse growth, improve quality of life for Edo residents, and reinforce the state’s appeal to investors.
