Okpebholo tackles Edo’s Debt, security, and infrastructure challenges, creates jobs

Edo State Governor Monday Okpehbolo has revealed that he inherited over ₦600 billion in local and foreign debts, including ₦180 billion owed to local contractors, from his predecessor Godwin Obaseki. Despite a lack of transparency in securing the loans, the government has begun addressing the debt.

Okpehbolo described a state plagued by insecurity, including cult killings, kidnappings, armed robbery, and cybercrime. In response, his administration strengthened anti-cult laws, supplied 60 vans and 400 motorcycles to security agencies, and recruited 2,500 officers into the Edo State Security Corps, significantly reducing crime.

On infrastructure, 28 new road projects covering more than 250 km are underway, alongside the construction of two flyovers at Ramat Park and Adesuwa Junction. Healthcare is being revitalized with new primary health centers across all local governments, diagnostic equipment, and a 150-bed hospital in development.

Economic and social initiatives include over 10,000 jobs created, a ₦1 billion interest-free loan scheme for traders, and a ₦1 billion scholarship fund for indigent students. The governor praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his guidance, which aided the administration’s progress.
