Edo State Governor Monday Okpehbolo has revoked the Right of Occupancy previously granted to the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) by the former administration of Godwin Obaseki. The property will now return to its original purpose as the historic Benin Central Hospital.
The Governor made this announcement during a meeting with the Benin Monarch, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, at the Government House, declaring that the long-standing controversy surrounding the MOWAA land had been resolved.
The decision follows a security incident at the MOWAA preview opening, where alleged armed individuals disrupted proceedings and reportedly held several foreign dignitaries hostage. The incident forced the organizers to postpone preview events that had been scheduled over the weekend.
