Benin City — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State conducted Local Government Congresses across all 18 council areas, electing new executive committees and delegates over the weekend.
Despite challenges such as inclement weather in some areas, party members reportedly turned out in large numbers to vote. The exercise was seen as an internal reorganisation aimed at solidifying PDP’s grassroots structure ahead of the 2027 general election.
Some party loyalists described the Congress as “rebirth” for the party’s local operations in Edo, noting that refreshed leadership at the ward and council levels will help in mobilising support for upcoming contests.
New leaders elected are expected to serve until the next internal electoral cycle and carry the burden of coordinating party activities, consolidating membership, and ensuring discipline of members. The elections were largely peaceful; no major disruptions or violence were reported during the congresses
