The PDP has strongly condemned the move by the Wike-backed faction to install a National Caretaker Committee, labelling it an unlawful attempt to hijack the party and a blatant contempt of court.
According to the party’s national leadership, conveyed via a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, the so-called Caretaker Committee is “fictitious” and lacks legal or constitutional basis especially as the Wike-aligned group had already been expelled from PDP, with formal expulsion certificates to show for it.
PDP officials argue that the purported action undermines the authority of the legitimate governing bodies namely its National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees which remain intact under their recognised leadership.
Moreover, the party pointed out that Wike’s camp had earlier sought judicial intervention to nullify the outcome of the last convention, a bid that was rejected by the court. By proceeding to announce the new committee, they say Wike’s group is acting in “clear disregard” of final court rulings.
In sum, PDP insists the action is more than a factional dispute, it is an attempt to “politically incapacitate” the party via illegal manoeuvres.
