The Presidency has sharply criticized Omoyele Sowore’s plan to lead a free-Nnamdi Kanu protest to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, calling it “unconstitutional, provocative, and politically motivated.”
In a statement, presidential aides said that while citizens have the right to peaceful assembly, the proposed demonstration targeting the seat of government is aimed at inciting tension and undermining institutional process. They warned that any breach of protocol or law would be firmly dealt with.
Sowore, for his part, has insisted that the march is within his rights and will be conducted legally and peacefully. He demanded that South-East political and religious leaders join him in defending Kanu’s rights and ending what he describes as arbitrary detention.
The spat has amplified tensions around Nnamdi Kanu’s detention and reignited debates about selective justice, regional inequalities, and the boundaries of protest in Nigeria.
