Remi Tinubu warns against weaponising religion

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has cautioned against the misuse of religion as an instrument of violence, division, or political manipulation, describing such actions as a distortion of divine intent and a threat to national unity.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday November 4th, Mrs Tinubu urged Nigerians to embrace religion as a tool for peace, tolerance, and moral leadership rather than a means of sowing discord. She stressed that “when religion is weaponised, the values that bind humanity together are undermined.”

The First Lady called on religious leaders, political figures, and social influencers to promote dialogue and mutual respect across faiths, saying that “faith should illuminate our path toward understanding, not deepen the cracks of division.”

Her comments come amid renewed national and international conversations about religious tolerance in Nigeria, following reports of sectarian tensions and perceived marginalisation among different faith communities.

Mrs Tinubu reiterated that the strength of Nigeria lies in its diversity and collective moral compass, adding that “peaceful coexistence remains the greatest demonstration of faith.”
