Renowned Writer Passes Away at 95

Renowned Nigerian writer and broadcaster, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun, has passed away at the age of 95. She died in the early hours of Thursday, March 6, 2025, shortly after celebrating her birthday in Lagos.

Segun’s illustrious career spanned various fields, including literature, education, broadcasting, and sports. She was a trailblazer in children’s literature in Nigeria, founding the Children’s Literature Association of Nigeria in 1978 and establishing the Children’s Documentation and Research Centre in 1990 in Ibadan.   Her contributions earned her numerous accolades, notably the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award in 2009.

A statement from her family expressed gratitude for her life of excellence in literature, broadcasting, and sports. The family assured that funeral arrangements would be announced soon.

Segun is survived by her daughter, Omowunmi Segun, grandchildren Rolari, Damilola, Ayomide, Fikemi, and great-grandchildren.
