REPS say tax law discrepancies being addressed within their constitutional remit

The House of Representatives has assured Nigerians that concerns over alleged discrepancies in recently passed 2025 tax reform laws are being dealt with strictly according to constitutional and legislative procedures. Lawmakers stressed that while questions have been raised about differences between the versions of tax laws passed by the National Assembly and those later gazetted in the Federal Government Gazette, the matter is being reviewed within the National Assembly’s statutory remit and in line with Nigeria’s legal framework.

The controversy erupted after doubts surfaced that the texts published publicly did not fully reflect the bills debated and approved by lawmakers, triggering public and professional concern about legislative integrity. In response, the House leadership set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the discrepancies and ordered the re-gazetting of the relevant Acts to ensure that official records accurately mirror the legislature’s intent.

Tax laws under scrutiny include the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, and other related statutes covering revenue administration and service establishment. The House said it will undertake corrective measures where necessary, in accordance with constitutional requirements and parliamentary conventions, to uphold legal certainty and public confidence in the legislative process.

Officials emphasised that the ongoing review does not imply any legislative defect but reflects a commitment to due process and transparency in law-making, with further updates to be provided as the review progresses.
