The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.
The notice, signed by lawmakers loyal to former Governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, comes amid ongoing political tensions. It follows the Assembly’s indefinite adjournment, just as Fubara sought to re-present the 2025 budget in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling.
Fubara’s previous attempt to present the budget was blocked when security operatives locked him out of the Assembly complex. The governor insists he notified Speaker Martin Amaewhule of his visit.
President Bola Tinubu recently met with PANDEF leaders, urging them to ensure Fubara implements the Supreme Court’s directives. Meanwhile, Ijaw groups have warned against any move to remove him, heightening tensions in the Niger Delta.
With the impeachment process underway, political observers say the coming weeks will be decisive for Rivers State’s leadership.
