RIVERS MOVES TO REVIVE DEFUNCT FARM PROJECT
In a bold move to tackle rising food insecurity and unemployment, the Rivers State government is set to resuscitate the long-abandoned Songhai Integrated Farms located in Bunu Tai, Tai Local Government Area. The project, once a beacon of agro-industrial self-reliance, is being revived under the leadership of the state’s Military Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (Rtd), who visited the site over the weekend.
Addressing journalists after inspecting the deteriorated facility, Ibas said the state’s renewed focus on agriculture aims to bolster domestic food production, create jobs, and significantly reduce dependence on food imports. He emphasized that the farm, once fully functional, will serve as both an economic hub and a social intervention scheme, especially for the youth.
The administrator also called on community leaders and local residents to support the project by safeguarding government assets, working in collaboration with security agencies to prevent theft and vandalism. He linked the success of the Songhai revival to broader food security strategies that could have ripple effects across the national economy.
During the visit, Ibas also stopped at the P-Mac Avenue road project in Rumuodara, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, where he commended the pace and quality of work. These developments form part of a broader infrastructural and economic revitalization strategy in Rivers State.
“The government has failed. We must act to protect ourselves. This is no longer a time for waiting,” Danjuma said, describing the attacks as a coordinated assault on rural life and Nigeria’s national cohesion.
The repeated attacks by bandits, herdsmen, and terrorist groups have once again raised questions about the government’s commitment to securing lives and property. Critics warn that continued inaction could deepen national fractures and embolden non-state actors.
