RSF seizes strategic Oil field

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Monday Dec 8th that it has taken control of the Heglig oilfield, located in the volatile South Kordofan region of Sudan.

Eyewitness reports and independent verification indicate that security forces and oil‑field workers evacuated the site many reportedly fleeing into neighbouring South Sudan just before RSF fighters entered the facility. The takeover came after the regular army withdrew from Heglig, apparently to avoid fighting that could endanger critical infrastructure.

Heglig is not only a key oil production site for Sudan, but it also hosts a central processing facility crucial for exporting South Sudanese oil making it a major source of revenue for both Khartoum and Juba.

Industry and human‑rights observers warn the seizure threatens to deepen Sudan’s economic collapse and could drastically reduce oil export volumes. The loss of Heglig along with prior disruptions to other fields may cut off a lifeline for state income, further compounding the dire impacts of the two‑and‑a‑half-year civil war.

Meanwhile, the takeover has sparked fears of renewed displacement and humanitarian crisis. As the conflict expands across Kordofan, resident communities already bearing the brunt of violence may face further insecurity, loss of livelihoods, and deprivation.

In a chilling sign of the war’s evolving dynamics, the RSF has vowed to “secure and protect” oil installations, but critics say this merely re‑brands paramilitary looting as “security operations,” offering no guarantee of stability for civilians or the energy industry.
