Sanusi Returns to Kano Throne as Governor Justifies Reinstatement

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has defended the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, praising his leadership qualities, deep knowledge of Islamic governance, and modern approach to traditional leadership. Speaking at the traditional Hauwa Nassarawa homage at the Government House, the governor stated that Sanusi’s return is aimed at uniting the emirate and strengthening Kano’s traditional institutions.

Sanusi, who was dethroned in 2020, has long been regarded as a reformist voice within Nigeria’s traditional leadership. Governor Yusuf highlighted his contributions to social justice and religious harmony, calling his reinstatement a necessary step for the unity and progress of Kano. He also used the occasion to discuss his administration’s developmental projects, which aim to transform Kano into a modern mega city while ensuring grassroots governance remains effective.

Sanusi, in his address, expressed deep gratitude to the governor and the Kano State House of Assembly for reinstating him. He commended the government’s achievements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, emphasizing that these efforts have significantly improved the welfare of Kano residents. He urged local government chairmen to intensify their efforts in grassroots development to ensure governance reaches the most underserved communities.

The Emir also participated in the 1903 traditional Hauwa Nassarawa homage, an annual cultural event of great significance in Kano. However, for security reasons, he opted for a vehicle convoy instead of the traditional horse procession, choosing alternative routes to ensure safe passage.

His return is expected to reshape Kano’s political and traditional leadership landscape, with analysts predicting that it could have far-reaching effects on the state’s governance and traditional structures.
